Civil War history lecture
Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) will hold a V- Civil War history lecture titled “The Odyssey of a Field . Officer: John I. Nevin” on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at 7 p.m. . in The Loeb Center on the Fauquier Campus, located at 6480 College Street in Warrenton. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture will examine the Civil War career of John I. Nevin. While not a commonly known historical figure, Nevin’s military career provides a snapshot of one man’s efforts to serve the Union and the internal problems of a volunteer regiment, the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry. In addition to examining Nevin’s life, the lecture will take a look at how the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry commemorated its involvement in the Gettysburg campaign and how Pennsylvania veterans chose to interpret their service.
The lecturer, Dana Shoaf, is the editor of America’s Civil War magazine and a current resident of Burkittsville, Md. In addition to his editorial work, Shoaf serves on the board of the Save Historic Antietam Foundation and as a historian for the Maryland Civil War Trails program. Shoaf holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Slippery Rock State University and is currently completing a doctoral degree at Kent State University.
