“What I see is that using taxpayer dollars merely encourages more illegal immigration into this country.
“We’ve got to have immigration laws that are enforced. I will sign as governor within my first month the agreement... to empower our state police to enforce immigration laws. I would submit a budget amendment to hire an additional 50 state troopers for immigration issues.
“It’s become a crime we ignore, turn our heads to, in this community and it’s serious. ... There are some estimates, 2001 estimates that we know have dramatically escalated, that we were spending $100 million a year educating children of illegal immigrants and $50 million on public safety [related to illegal immigration].
“Employers who employ illegals ought to have ramifications as well. We’re just asking people to follow the law. I don’t see how that’s being insensitive.”
