Ever had fresh hard cider?
Every season has its memories. Some for Autumn might be of walking about in the cool fall air, hands getting chilly as twilight slowly gathers, dusky hues of long sunsets and long shadows echoed in the browns, reds and oranges of the autumn leaves, bonfires and pumpkins.
Remember picking up black walnuts and smelling the spicy green aroma of their staining husks? And apples, mottled red, green, yellow and brown. And the muddy dark brown of freshly made apple cider. If ever a flavor captured the feel of Autumn, it is cold fresh apple cider.
lb get good cider in Rappahannock you can stop at one of the roadside stands, or go to one of the orchards or farms, like Roy's, Jenkins, or Muskrat Haven. Sunnyside Farms has an excellent cider.
Unpasteurized dder is a bit harder to get, and has an even better flavor. Williams Orchard in Flint Hill has local unpasteurized dder right now.
And for something rarer yet, Smokehouse Winery on Ashby Road outside of Sperryville has fresh, lightly fizzy hard dder. Crisper and less sweet than regular dder, it packs a punch on the order of beer. John Hallberg gets his dder from Williams Orchard and spikes it with a dose of wine yeast After only a few days, a portion of the sugar has turned to alco: hoi and fizz. At first, the dder is still sweet and the alcohol ^ light, but in only a few days or week, it becomes less and less sweet and correspondingly stronger, ending up bone dry and ,v as strong as wine.
Unfortunately, you can’t take jugs home with you, but if you stop by the Smokehouse Winery and visit vintner and brewer John Hallberg, you can -grab a quick pint before or after a fall hike up the nearby Hazel River Trail. Fresh hard dder is a highly perishable product only at its peak for a few days, so Hallberg cap’t stock it up for later sale. But there is some this weekend, and if people express an interest maybe he can be persuaded to brew some more of this hard to find , autumnal elixir. If you call and order ahead, he could brew you a five gallon mini keg you could use tor a fall gathering too.
Call the Smokehouse at (540) 987-3194 and arrange to drop by. He’s usually there during the day. lb get to the Smokehouse, take Route 231 South to just past the F.T. Valley store, turn right on Ashby Road, and go about a mile, until you see the thatched roof on your left
