In this case, numbers do count. They can intimidate, too.
Warren County and Page County used their numbers to dominate the boys and girls track and field meet against Rappahannock Wednesday afternoon in Shenandoah.
Rappahannock has just 29 athletes competing on its two teams. Schools like Warren and Page have larger populations, so they have more athletes from where to draw. RandolphMacon Academy also participated in the meet.
“Mentally, they see the numbers,” Rappahannock County head coach Scott Stephens said. “It can affect them that day.”
Still, the Panthers did find some success in their second-place finish. Senior Samantha Brown had a dominant performance in the field events, as she won the nigh jump and finished fourth in the shot put, discus and long jump. Junior Emily Raney was second in the triple jump and 400-yard dash.
The Panthers took third in the team standings. Junior Josh Makela won the 3,200-yard run for the second time this season. Seniors Chris Harris and Corey Voorhies finished third in the high jump and shot put, respectively. Harris also finished fourth in the 100. Junior Irving Smith was fourth in the high jump.
