TERMS
In our culture, black clothing is selected for mourning garb because it is associated with a somber attitude. However, not all cultures have the same outlook. For instance, white is worn by fhoumers in Japan and China. In parts of Africa, mourners adorn their bodies with red paint. Some contend that we wear black because it is so out of the ordinary with what we usually wear. In fact, it has been said that one of the reasons that we wear black is to use it as a sort of disguise. This notion arises from the ancients’ desire to protect themselves from death spirits by wearing disguises. Mourning veils may be one lingering manifestation of this practice.
