Note their nests
All wrens are famous for their noisy songs, perky behavior and messy nesting habits. We love the first two characteristics, and grudgingly accept the last. Wrens are cavity nesters and generally nest in woodpecker holes or nesting boxes. But they are also known to select the most inconvenient locations for us humans, including hanging planters, watering cans, mailboxes, clothespin bags, or car bumpers.
