residents, and mated pairs remain together throughout the year defending permanent territories. Some pairs mate for life. They are certainly among the most familiar and popular of songbirds, and worth watching anytime.

Though small for birds they are fairly large for wrens, typically 5 Vi inches from beak to tail, and very attractive, with reddish-brown upper parts and buff under parts. Most striking is the pure white stripe above each eye.

In winter we can also see the appropriately named (for us, anyway) winter wrens, wide-ranging migratory wrens that breed in the Appalachian mountains and throughout the northern United States and Canada. These are tiny, mouse-like birds no more than 4 inches long, with duller colors than Carolina wrens and lacking the distinctive eyebrows. Most noticeable are their ludicrously short tails that are held erect in a perky pose that is the picture of bird cuteness.

House wrens are also common in the county, but only in summertime when they migrate from southern wintering grounds to breed here. House wrens are similar in color to winter wrens, but larger with longer tails. And it wouldn’t be impossible to see
