County administrator John McCarthy was admittedly teary eyed at the loss of Charles K. “Pete” Estes.
“Pete’s authority is evident throughout this county,” said a somber McCarthy. “He loved and was loved by a fine woman and he was respected by many.”
“I will miss him.”
Estes, who died surrounded by family in the early hours of April 1, was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon at Sperryville Cemetery.
The service held earlier at the Sperryville United Methodist Church was a celebration of his life with reflections from those who worked closely with him over his many years of public service.
The church was packed and outside cars lined the streets.
Rev. Jennings Hobson III remembered a “curly” Estes who liked a certain kind of apple in his cider.
“Pete genuinely cared,” smiled Hobson, “about this community, the people here, and the future.”
“I’m his Yankee connection,” grinned Rev. John Heddleston who remembered Estes from his days as the editor of the Rappahannock News.
