The organizers of the Old Dominion Hounds Point-toPoint prayed for rain. But — just in case the petitions fell on deaf ears — they let money talk.
Tb bolster their chances of attracting America’s best timber horses, Old Dominion race officials tacked on a new $2,000 purse to lure horsemen to enter Saturday’s three-mile feature.
And it worked.
A full half-inch of rain fell Monday night, softening the Ben Venue Farm course somewhat, with more rain predicted later in the week.
In a year of near-drought conditions that have plagued the spring point-to-point season in Virginia, ODH added the purse to guarantee a good show for the near sellout crowd at the April 8 event.
Old Dominion’s featured Leeds Don open timber often attracts horses headed to the rich National Steeplechase Association sanctioned Maiyland timber races and the Virginia Gold Cup.
Early entries promise a competitive ‘chase: Gold Cup winners Chinese Whisper, Lord Kenneth and Miles Ahead, from the Kinross Farm, square off with a trio from the championship stable of Sanna Neilson in Pennsylvania. Seventeen horses are entered.
Saturday’s undercard includes a junior field masters’ chase; novice rider and Virginia-bred flat races; amateur, maiden and open races over hurdles; and ladies and owner-riders over timber, in addition to the Leeds Don.
