The supervisors have weeks to study the 40-page budget document before holding a public hearing on the spending plan in late April. Then, at their next regularly scheduled meeting, on May 1st, the supervisors will vote on the school budget.
Will they cut the budget? According to Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell, the cutting has already been done. “The board has already cut $237,000 from this budget”, he said, adding “we’ve made our cuts up front...a huge amount of cutting.”
The proposal may include increases for teachers of more than 3 percent, but it plans a boost for the superintendent of less than 1 percent—to an annual salary of $105,000.
(The five School Board members are given token stipends that, each month, would barely cover a fancy lunch—$49 and change.)
Among the lowest paid at starting salary, are teacher’s aides .and licensed practical nurses, at just over $14,000; janitors start at $15,813.
