“He liked to play his cards close to his vest,” chuckled Luke as he recounted in humorous detail for the large crowd gathered a story where he thought he had “upped” Estes on a detail from a 1935 bear incident.

Luke and Estes formed a gaming relationship over “points of fact” and the two men delighted in out doing one another but Luke rarely, if ever, could.

“Oh, you mean that bear that took that guy’s arm off and the case went to...,” recanted Estes as if he’d just read it in a headline.

“Hard to top Pete Estes.”

Attorney Bill Fletcher told the audience that he had “slipped into a space of sadness” over the passing of Pete Estes.
