Estes’ daughter Susan was elegant in her words as she recalled a father that demanded respect and who left her and her family with a rich tradition steeped in respecting others.
“He had a sign that read, “the boss isn’t always right, but he’s the boss.”
“Papa Pete was our constant guiding hand. He’ll always be a soft whisper in our ears.”
Commonwealth’s attorney Peter Luke figured out that over Estes lifetime they had shared over 200 meetings together taking care of the public’s business.
“Pete and I sat together making the hard decisions,” recalled Luke. “He was true to his oath, he always came prepared and he was always fair.”
“Once he dug in his heels, you couldn’t move him.”
Luke was quick to point out that Estes was very competitive and had a quick mind.
“He had a fantastic memory..particularly for historical events. He was a walking encyclopedia.”
