Three to competition
WCDS students in fourth through eighth grade recently participated in the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge, and three of the class winners were invited to participate in the State Challenge.
The grade level winners were: Sam Nolan (4th), Henry Johnson (5th), Kaitlin Burgess (6th), Bret Heddleston 7th, and Andrew Smith (8th). Ms. Burgess of Front Royal, Mr. Heddleston of Sperryville, and Mr. Smith of Washington competed last week at the State Challenge for students in grades six through eight, and Mr. Heddleston made it all the way to the final 10 (out of 100 statewide competitors) before being eliminated. WCDS students have a track record of excellence in writing, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling, and having three students from such a small school score high enough to be eligible for the state level competition helped bolster that reputation.
