Tax relief for
the elderly
At their evening session, the BOS voted in unanimous approval of an ordinance designed to relieve the tax burden of elderly land owners with low incomes. Rappahannock’s skyrocketing real-estate values can represent a serious problem for retirees who aren’t generating the income to keep up with the ever increasing taxes on land they may have owned for years.
The new ordinance will exclude hum calculation of net combined financial worth up to five acres of land for Rappahannock County residents over age 65 whose net worth doesn’t exceed $150,000. An earlier version of the ordinance already existed, but only excluded one acre for residents worth up to $100,000. According to County Administrator John McCarthy, the ordnance has always been underutilized due to a lack of awareness in Rappahannock County.
“Getting the word out is the thing,” said McCarthy.
