Three-time Virginia challenge Middle School State Wrestling Champion Greg Flournoy, an 8th grader at Rappahannock County High School; won the 2007 Virginia Challenge Middle School State Wrestling Championship held at Hampton University on January 6th and 7th. In the finals, Greg beat a two-time state champion — who he had never beaten before — in overtime 4-2. Greg also won in 2004 and 2006 and was runner up in 2005. Greg is coached by Eric Brown, Eddie Jenkins, Hodge Miller, and Scott Fletcher. Flournoy, who is 13 years old, has been wrestling for six years. He won at the state competition at the 90 lb. weight, and figures to move to the 103 lb. class next year. Where does Greg get the drive needed for success at wrestling? “It’s just you out there,” he said, “you gotta have that dedication to go home every day and exercise, do push ups. There is no team; if you lose; you can’t blame anyone.” Young Greg also plays baseball at school - but for him the wrestling season does not end with the state championship. No, he wrestles all year round, in private leagues, as he puts it, “around the Beltway. We wrestle all around, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey.”
