Dominion and its partner Allegheny Power would build the Virginia segment of the line. Allegheny also would construct the remaining 210-mile portion of the proposed line through Pennsylvania.
PEC, local governments and landowners worry about a line’s effects on the area’s scenic, historic, agricultural and cultural resources. Landowners in northern Fauquier have put more than 70,000 acres under conservation easements to protect their land from further development.
PEC contends Dominion wants the project because the utility would collect substantial revenue base on electricity transmitted via the new line from the Midwest to the Northeast. But the environmental organization has been unable to prove that point because it claims Dominion refuses to furnish data that could be used to determine demand.
Dominion made its case for the proposed 500,000-volt line to the editorial board in November. With headquarters in Herndon, Times Community Newspapers comprises 14 newspapers, including the Times-Democrat.
