ceremonies were incredibly spectacular, displaying all the pomp and circumstance of the Swedish government. The award ceremony was'held ip the Stockholm Concert Hall amid a magnificent trumpet fanfare as the King of Sweden awarded the Nobel laureates a medal and an honorary diploma.

The celebrations included an elaborate banquet in the Stockholm City Hall, followed by a ball. “For the Nobel banquet, they had a procession of 500 waiters loaded down with food trays amid fireworks and music,” Mello said. “They served about 1500 people instantly.” During the banquet, members of the Swedish Academy of Dance performed for the guests, as well as several vocalist performances.

As a Nobel Laureate, Craig Mello and his family members met with several dignitaries, dining with the American ambassador and meeting with the Swedish Royal Family. Mello said that family members took turns traveling with Craig on his various events. “We kind of tag-teamed it,” Mello said.

Craig was also-given the chance to visit the Swedish Parliament and address the members during a special session. The Nobel laureates were also part of a panel for a BBC special feature on the prize winners. Mello noted that it was very interesting to see that the Nobel winners were given such a large media platform to speak on important issues facing the world.
