Mello said that his parents, Jim and Sally Mello, of Rixeyville Va., were overwhelmed by the recognition that Craig received. “For a parent to see one of their sons recognized for 12 years of school and laboring for years in a lab, is a dream come true,” he said. Mello added that the entire family was immensely proud of Craig’s achievement. “When the spotlight was focused on him it revealed a beautiful passionate person that we all knew,” Mello said seriously. He noted that Craig, 45, is one of the youngest Nobel winners ever. “He realizes that he has been given a great responsibility,” said Mello adding, “He now has a platform to get his message of hope out to the medical community”
