Kellart said his biggest concern about the change in distribution rules was that some brands of Virginia wines would no longer be available on store shelves.
“We’re very strong believers that if Virginia wines can be sold in retail and restaurants, we can be seen as a serious wine-producing area,” he said. “We wanted to have our wines available other than just at the winery.”
One possible effect of a continued self-distribution ban, Kellart said, is that it might discourage new wineries from starting up. Had it not been for self-distribution, Kellart said he may have decided against opening Gray Ghost in 1994.
“I think we would have thought twice about it,” he said. “Knowing the capital investment you have to put into it, I seriously would have had to thought twice about it.”
