Last year more than 200,000 deer were harvested in the state. The VDGIF maintains that, despite the mild temperatures, they do not expect that number to go down this year. In fact, more deer may be killed this year because of an extended doe season that goes into effect for the first time this season.
During the 2006-07 season, it is legal to hunt doe (antlerless deer) in Loudoun, Prince William and Fairfax counties for an additional four weeks. In those counties, the season will end on Feb. 3.
Fauquier County has an especially high population of deer. Last year there were more deer harvested in Fauquier (7,340) than in any other county in the state.
On the wing
Bird hunting is also popular in the area. For those who do not own private land, there are a number of public domains where bird hunting is permitted, They include the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers, George Washington & Jefferson National Forest and the Shady Grove Hunting Preserve in Remington.
