Lord Fairfax Community

Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) is not providing distance learning classes via “compressed video” this year. As an alternative, LFCC is sending a professor to RCHS to teach Psychology to students for dual enrollment (college and high school) credit. The course will be taught during “4th block” beginning January 22. During the fall semester, 53 RCHS students earned a total of 240 college credits in dual enrollment courses with LFCC.

Journalism class

wins grant

The Broadcast Journalist Class has been awarded a grant of $1500.00 from the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF) High School Broadcast Journalism Project. The funds will be used to upgrade equipment for this RCHS program.

“Next Step” News

This fall, the Next Step College and Career Access Program took 80 students on visits to eight colleges and trade schools. Next Step advisers also led a 5-day College Success Workshop for 23 1012th graders in August and 16 College Success workshops for 6-8th graders. In December, Next Step organized an Alumni Assembly with 13 RCHS alums for the 10- 12th graders.

Upcoming events include a trip to Lord Fairfax (LFCC) for students to take the placement test. The “Next Step” program, which is committed to helping every RCHS student find a plan for education after high school was funded by a two-year grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Since January of 2005, they have taken 175 students to 28 campuses. They doubled the amount of scholarship money available to RCHS graduates. In 2005, three first generation students (first in their family to attend college) went on to four-year colleges. In 2006, that number was 19. In 2005, 47% of all students went on to a two or four-year college. In 2006, that number was 73%.
