By THERESA REYNOLDS Rappahannock Va« Staff I filer New opportunities for Rappahannock's gifted and talented children will be part of a Chapter II Block Grant described belatedly to the county school board at its October meeting. The letter informing the board of the grant awarded August 17 said that the $12,525.88 allocation was Rappahannock's share of the state block grant procedure that replaces Title I appropriations. Gerald Lysik, assistant superintendent, said that the shift in emphasis from federal to state appropriations was the reason for the delay.
Lysik said that much of the money was already earmarked and was just in a different form than previously budgeted. The tunds. representing $11.88 per Rappahannock student, will be used for the library fund, for career guidance, and for a three week summer gifted and talented program that will benefit elementary school children in grades 4, 5. and 6.
In response to questions from Wakefield supervisor Robert Eastham about possible confusion between the state grant money and the Title I money that it replaces. Chairman Beveriy Massie noted that the county treasurer would be alerted to watch for these educational funds
Robert Estabrook, school superintendent, said that a summer program for gifted and talented children in the upper levels of the high school may also become a reality. Estabrook said that the school superintendents of the four counties served by Piedmont Vocational Technical Center were working together on that possibility.
Transportation Problems
Lysik also reported on some progress in correcting school transportation problems. A new pick-up truck has baen purchased, and the offer of a sheriffs car accepted. The board had received bids for a 1965 Ford 4- Door and an okl Chevrolet pickup, both not operable, and accepted the bid of $50.00 from J. R Hitt for the Ford and the bid of $198.00 from Johnny Ray Pullen for the Chevrolet pickup
