of life as it might have been 200 years ago. Houses, cars and modern machines became cabins, horses and simple tools. Noise, pollution and dangerous highways dissipated into clean forests and healthful surroundings. And the more primitive environment presented unfamiliar dangers of its own. And so on our excursion with Lyn we received a lesson in history, cultural contrasts, and personal lifestyles. We considered our effects on the environment, and its effects on us.
This particular exercise was designed for children in grade six and younger. But Lyn was guiding a group of adults—participants in a training workshop for an innovative conservation education program, soon to be offered to Rappahannock’s teachers as a suggested curriculum supplement.
The program is new to Virginia. It is called Project Learning Tree and, since its inception in 1976, has been universally Draised. Project
