LooKing eiatea ana yei disbelieving, Gregory stood with his attorneys after the verdict was read to be sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Carleton Penn, who ordered the fine to be paid within 15 days. Just after court adjourned, Gregory was surrounded by an emotional and congratulatory ^rouj of family and friends and, appearing on the verge of tears, shied away from reporters’ queries.
"The only comment I’d like to make is...well, I think the jury said it very nice,” Gregory said.
The verdict, reached in four and a half hours of deliberation by a six-man, six-woman jtiry, was the denouement of a two-year drama that began when Gregory burst into the bedroom of a rented cottage north of Middleburg and found his estranged wife Monique C. Dana making love with LaBove.
Gregory opened fire with a .45 caliber handgun, killing LaBove with three shots.
The Commonwelath had asked a conviction of first degree murder, arguing Gregory was capable of resisting the urge to fire the gun and had premeditated the killing.
“He didn’t resist that impulse, he carried out the scheme to its own bloody conclusion," Assistant Commonwealth Attorney James E. Mechling said in closing.
