Democrat Sp**oial Writer A paid television commercial for Republican Senate candidate Paul Trible shows him sitting in the cockpit of a jet fighter.
His helmet is on. and he is giving a pilot’s classic “thumbs up” signal.
Mr. Trible, of course, is not a pilot and has never been in the military service. The voice in the commercial makes no claim of either, but citizens viewing the ad might reasonably conclude that the candidate is a veteran combat flyer.
As any ad man will tell you, it’s the picture that counts.
Early in the campaign, Mr. Trible’s manager sent a memo to potential contributors. It alleged that staff members of his opponent, Democrat Dick Davis, attended a meeting of national labor leaders in Washington, showed TV spots, and received pledges of a quarter-million dollars in campaign contributions.
In spite of the fact that not a shred of evidence has been produced proving any of this happened, the Trible camp doggedly stands by its story. Mr. Trible says that since Mr. Davis will receive labor contributions, the allegations are “substantially correct.”
