At the start of the second 45 minutes, a penalty kick awarded Wakefield on a Rappahannock foul veered wide to the left. Roaring with the enthusiasm that he maintained throughout most of the game, goalie Baines easily caught the black and white ball again and again to end Wakefield’s drives without a score. McCoy’s strong foot sent the action back out to the middle of the field after each unsuccessful attempt by the Owls. As Rapp’s offense swung into gear. Owl goalkeeper Jeoff Clouser saved several tries by Doug McCabe and Mike DelGrosso before McCabe finally managed to sneak the ball into the net to tie the tally at 1-1. And then the fates stepped in. Striking at the Wakefield goal, the Panthers sent the ball downfield ahead of the RCHS centers. Owl fullback Scotty Reid, yards in front of the charging Rappahannock line, knocked the ball back to Clouser for what looked like an easy return to midfield but Clouser bobbled the ball and it rolled into the net to put Rapp ahead for the first time, 2-1. Another goal by the visitors was called back, again for an off sides violation. The home team maintained the advantage until the clock wound down to about ten minutes. Then the Owls burst through with a well-placed cross from John O’Neill to Bobby Polk who booted one in to tie the score for the second time.
Action on the field, intense from the opening whistle, grew ever more frantic as players on both squads pushed themselves to the limit, fighting for the win . The Owls had a final chance in the closing minutes of regulation play after they were awarded a penalty kick a few yards from the goal on a violation called against Baines. But Jon McCullough, part of the Panther wall, blocked the attempt.
The goalies were the superstars of the two fiveminute overtime periods, each fending off line drives that looked like sure scores. When the time finally ran out. it was still two all.
The game was Rappahannock's best performance to date. Centers DelGrosso and McCabe worked smoothly as a unit with right and left wings Vince Caporucio and Tom East ham.
Will Oliver had an outstanding afternoon. Rappahannock's little halfback played big at both ends of the field, repeatedly stealing the ball from opponents a foot taller and passing it off to his teammates. Halfbacks Jim Racer, Jon McCullough. James Dennis and Lucky McCoy seemed to have
