Recent News Release
More recently, following an appearance by Mr. Trible at Virginia Wesleyan University, his campaign put out a news release containing the following paragraph: "Trible’s opponent, Lt. Gov. Richard Davis, had been invited to today’s event but refused to appear. He also refused to send a speaker on his behalf. Organizers of today's meeting placed an empty chair on the stage of the college gymnasium to symbolize Davis’ refusal to show up.”
A spokesman for Virginia Wesleyan categorically refuted every detail of the paragraph. Mr. Davis had not been invited, no surrogate would have been asked to come in any case, and certainly no chair was placed on the stage to symbolize the candidates absense.
Again the Trible camp, noting that there were extra chairs near the speaker, stood by the story as substantially correct.
