It’s been a rough week for Rappahannock’s Lady Panthers. They lost a heartbreaker to Brenstville last Thursday and then came home to a rout at the hands of Strasburg on Tuesday night. In the away contest with Brentsville, Rappahannock’s Karen Jordan and Ann Tupper both hit double figures, combining for 31 points to spark the offensive game. Donna Atkins spurred the defense as she came up with seven steals. On the backboards at both ends of the court, Jordan pulled down the ball 15 times while Tupper and Kim Settle each were credited with seven rebounds. It was a great team effort but it wasn’t quite enough. With eight seconds left at the end of the fourth quarter, Rappahannock was down by two, 43-41. Coach Teresa McLawhorn called time out and set up a play. Jordan tied the score with a last shot to send the contest into overtime

Rappahannock came up with the ball and while setting up a play, Atkins was fouled. The spunky little guard went to the line on a one-and-one with two seconds left in the three minute overtime. She missed and the clock ran out with the Panthers on the short end, 44-43.
Jordon was high for RCHS with 21 followed by Tupper with ten, Cindy Bywaters and Settle both with four, Atkins with three and Cindy Weaver with one.

The Panthers’ chances looked slim against Strasburg before Tuesday night’s home game even started. The visitors’ support personnel — athletic director, coaches, managers and statisticians — outnumbered Rappahannock’s players.
