By word or inference, a pattern of misrepresentations. deliberate or otherwise, has emerged. And with it has emetged the issue of the integrity of the Trible candidacy.
It is, by any definition, a “real issue." It could be the most compelling real issue of the campaign.
None of this is to say that Mr. Trible is personally untruthful. The problem is. in his zeal to win election. , he has. perhaps (yvithout meaning to do so, redefined his concept of truth as it applies to politics and political strategy.
History shows it is very easy for a candidate to convince himself that truth may be bent badly without snapping when it comes to politics. One can come to believe there is nothing really wrong about bending it; that indeed people wink and expect this kind of thing.
Well, they don’t.
Mr. Trible is not the first ambit ious though misguided politician to fall into such a trap. Another gentleman of recent memory made a similar blunder on a far grander scale and from a far less vulnerable position.
His name was Richard Nixon, and it brought him down.
