Seventh grade teacher Lynne Baines, who was in the audience, explained that the trip had been scheduled for March because parents had been concerned about the bad weather that sometimes plagued the January trips. "The rates are higher in March, but we feel that the later trip would relieve some worry." Baines told the board.
Eastham said that he felt the board should be willing to make up the difference in the cost of the trips for the sake of reassuring panicky parents. "There were parents in my area concerned for their children's safety." he said.
Baines pointed out that the school system had never been called upon to subsidize the trips. "This class has some real workers." she said. "1 feel certain that they will be able to raise the money.”
