When someone mentions Hawaii, he usually means the Hawaiian Islands, not the "Big Island” of Hawaii. Even though it’s the namesake of the chain, relatively little is known about the Big Island.
The island of Hawaii has no Waikiki Beach, no Pearl Harbor, no famous city like Honolulu. What it does have is an abundance of natural wonders as impressive as any of the better-known Hawaiian tourist attractions. Visitors will marvel at the variation in the landscape on Hawaii. Lush highlands, vast sugar cane fields and desolate stretches of jet-black lava can all be found on the island.
Hilo, the capital of the island, is also the capital of Hawaii's booming orchid and anthurium (a large, red, waxey-looking flower) industries. In Hilo one can visit Nani Mau Gardens—20 brilliant, blooming acres of the flora for which the islands are famous.
