The future home of the Virginia Gold Cup races near The Plains has been given its permanent name, "Great Meadow."
The Meadow Outdoors Foundation, managing the sweeping 240 acre property along two miles of Rt. 17 and 245 in perpetual open space for area turf events, announced the selection this week from among nearly 100 proposed names for the site.
The Gold Cup event is expected to move from its present Broadview site in Warrenton to Great Meadow in May of 1984 or 1985. Arthur W. Arundel, of The Plains, who established the new site and Foundation earlier this year and is heading an experienced group designing the course for future stecplechasing and other turf sports, commented, "Great Meadow speaks to what it looks like. We shall, though, have to earn the adjective, 'Great'."
Proceeds from Gold Cup meetings and other events at the site will go to Fauquier Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads and other community charities. Approved as a 501c-3 tax deductible organization, the Foundation is head by Chairman Maximiliam Tufts of Warrenton. who was named Fauquier County's Man of the Year in 1981 for his long record of public service in conservation of open spaces and community civic work.
