A long abandoned nameless farm which had grown up in weed, the properly was purchased earlier this year in Warrcnton bankruptcy proceedings from a former owner by Mr. Arundel who had the concept of a permanent site for turf sports. Commonly referred to in the area as a "huge watery crayfish field." the site has since undergone intensive water drainage and soil work, and been approved for public events use by Fauquier planners and the board of supervisors.
The newly seeded turf course now has its first early stand of new grass. A spokesman said nearly $110.000 has been spent out of contributions to the Foundation on turf preparation at Great Meadow. This does not. he said. include the contributions of time and equipment by many in the c om m u n i t y . including Senator John Warner of Upperville. George L.. Ohrstrom of The Plains. General and Mrs. George L. Seignious, The Plains, and The Airlie Conference Center. Fie added that the Foundation is still trying to identify the person who "generously and anonymously" left otl a big wagon load of hav for mulching the newly seeded turf course.
