That competition, as is now indicated in statements by network spokespersons, was conducted in three areas of trial. One was quantitative. to be measured in Nielsen ratings; the second, professional, to be measured in such achievements as earliest predictions of the outcome of the election, either in individual contests, or in over-all gains and losses by the two parties. Or statistically, by best scores of right over wrong predictions, with some refinements and allowances of greater margins of error for early mistakes than were tolerated for late errors, or persistence in error.

The third range of judgments were more subjective. and included distinctions of style, of speaking, language, general attitude of commentators, psychological impact, and supporting factors such as graphics, studio setting, and non-human, mechanically produced sonics.

The Nielsen ratings were inconclusive, each network seeming to have attracted, or caught, roughly the same number of viewers, nationwide, with variations, possibly significant ones, among the major cities of the country. NBC is reported to have won in New York; CBS
