While Virginia received the same amount of money this year as last from the federal government for the fuel assistance program, according to Commissioner Lukhard. Rappahannock did not get the same amount from Virginia, Kreitler reported that the county will get approximately S36.000 this winter for fuel assistance. “We received 12 percent more last year,” she noted.
But despite the drop in funding and Friday’s cut-off on submission of applications, the welfare department's director is optimistic about meeting the fuel needs of local residents this winter. “We'll do the best with what we have," Kreitler said, suggesting that anyone with questions on fuel assistance call her at the welfare office in Washington, 675-3613. "We’ll try to work something out so that nobody in Rappahannock is cold.

"Anti-freeze has a sweet taste and is a templing treat for animals. Veterinarians in Virginia treat numbers of dogs and cats for anti-freeze poisoning each year," said Dr. David Moreman, Public Information Director of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association t VVMA).
"It’s probably more common than anyone realizes. An owner may find his pet in a coma or dead and not know what has happened.” said Dr. Moreman.
Moreman recommends that old anti-freeze be flushed down the sewer drain since it is biodegradable. Any that has spilled onto the driveway or street should be washed for 10 minutes toward the street drain. No puddles should be left for pets to get into. And no residue should be left behind because the dried crystals contain the poison. The drain pan should also be washed thoroughly.
