was broken by the fact that ABC won in Philadelphia and in Detroit. There has. as yet, been no breakdown of network appeal as one moves south to north in the country, passing through those divisions of the country now noted by political observers, as the sun-belt, the sleet belt, (not as clearly identified as the other two of the trio, but covering southern Indiana, and southern Ohio, parts of Pennsylvania, northern Tennessee, and Kentucky, and Missouri), and the northern snow-belt.
It was in the second category of standards that the competition was most intense. ABC claims that it called the gubernatorial and Senate races before its two rivals did. How much earlier, ABC does not say, nor does it report how many wrong calls it made.
NBC did not dispute the ABC tabulation of “first calls", but declared that once “called”, not one “call” had to be corrected. Their big winner, NBC noted, was their "calling” the victory of Governor Thompson in Illinois. Evidently, NBC txiok into account one fact of political reality, namely, that Richard Dailey is no longer among the living Democratic politicians of Illinois, and (hat late counts, and lost and found ballot boxes of former days, were not likely to be facotrs in this election.
