So after working three years to get into the tribe, we found ourselves, after two and a half months, about to be thrown out. We had to learn very quickly how to survive politically."
The Heiners also had to struggle with another Wowsha taboo—the maintenance at all times of complete self-control. “The worst thing you can do is to get angry or cry. The Wowsha make fun mercilessly of anyone who loses control; he becomes an object of ridicule. Children learn very quickly that there are rules for expressing anger. You can never double up a .fist or hit someone in the face. You always hit someone with the flat of your hand squarely between the shoulder blades. You can hit them as hard as you want — I've seen people knocked ten, fifteen yards."
Before closing his presentation Heiner suggested that “In many ways the Wowsha live in a society more peaceful than our own. Moreover, despite their going completely naked, they are more modest than we in important ways. Perhaps the most common and most valuable lesson of anthropology is that the more different human beings appear to be, the more they are alike. What is truly exotic is how much we have in common."
