stale today. He has that gift, rare in a politician, of knowing when to speak out and when to keep quiet in order to give his views their maximum force. As a result, the famed Byrd golden silence can have as devastating an impact as his spoken word. All of these factors are related only incidentally to his being a member of the U.S. Senate. Hence, when he ceases to be a member a few weeks from now. he w ill take them with him when he returns to private life.
If there was ever doubt he intends to continue to apply these formidable assets in Virginia politics. Sen. Bvrd dispelled any such notion in a speech last week in Richmond.
Addressing some 800 like-minded guests at a farewell dinner in his honor. Sen. Byrd said. "Come next month, 1 will no longer be in the Senate. But I shall have a greater freedom of action than I have had in the past, and I shall continue to work alongside you in behalt ol the principles and philosophy of government in which you and 1 believe."
Now there's a sentence to titillate the imagination of the politicians and political observers in the state!
It was a new Word from Byrd, and the word was clear. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr., unlike the old soldier of the ballad, is not about to "just fade away."
At the very least he was signalling he will be very much a part of the state’s political action, that aspiring politicians would be wise to have a care for a Byrd endorsement, nonendorsement or, indeed, for his fabled golden silence.
Was there more? Was there a veiled hint perhaps - just perhaps - of a Byrd eandidaev for governor in 1985?
Whatever it all means, it is apparent that while the Byrd era in the U.S. Senate may be over, in Virginia it marches on and with a right spirited step, at that.
