General District Court Judge John Alexander, Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner and County Game Warden Jim Bankston were all in agreement that leniency was in order in the sentencing of Leonard Wagoner of Front Royal for shooting a bear out of season.
In his court appearance on December 7, Wagoner showed the judge his copy of the state game regulations and explained how he had read the map in such a way as to believe that bear season was open when he shot his bear on November 15.
Bankston said that Wagoner had brought the carcass to the checking station at the Flint Hill Storehouse to be weighed and checked. When Bankston learned of the bear killing, he went to see Wagoner at his Front Royal home and charged him with the offense.
