For the youngsters, Bruce expects strong finishes from two teams of brothers: Matthew and Michael Owings and Bart and John Secrist.

The women’s race also promises exciting competition this year. Marti Nelson, the women’s record holder, is 'returning to defend her winning time of 47:05. Merrill Strange, Rappahannock woman winner in the 1981 race, has resumed training interrupted by the recent birth of her first child. Sherrie Waggoner, last year’s 13th place woman has greatly increased her training regimen and is said by some to be the one to watch. Mary O’Meara, three-time Eva B. Smith winner, has not registered as yet but fans are hoping she’ll return to protect her title.

Bruce has heard that the Mink sisters - Susy and Laura - are planning to join the field on Saturday, although they haven’t registered as yet. If they do, they’re a sure bet to finish at the top of the women’s category.
