The land designated for conservation uses must be eligible cropland which meets certain requirements.

The land taken out of production must have been devoted to row crops or small grains in two of the last three years.

The land may not be harvested, and grazing is not allowed between April 1, 1983 and October 1, 1983, except on winter w heat acres which were seeded before the Payment-in-Kind program was announced.

Conservation practices such as annual, biennial or perennial grasses and legumes must be established on cropland taken out of production as soon as possible after the normal planting period for spring crops.
