The soils are then classified, depending on how they fit these rating systems:
Land capability classification. A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) systrem of classifying soils according to their potential for Field crops or pasture. Seven classes and four subclasses indicate the limitations of each type of soil. This system is the most widely used land-rating scheme in farmland protection.
Important farmland. A USDA rating system that places land in one of four groups: prime farmland, unique farmland, land of statewide importance, and land of local importance.
