Trojan Blade landed on top over the last, and Hilary Thompson in a brilliant hand-ridden finish sent him across the wire two lengths to the good of Pamela Sue Evans’ Double Dog, Willie McCormick up. Third was Oliver Brown’s Kiev, ridden by Don Yovanovich. It was the first trip over fences for the winner, owned by Herbert Poland and trained by Tommy Lee Jones.
The open timber race became a walk-over when Seneca Valley Farm’s Land Landing was the only horse to appear in the paddock. Don Yovanovich galloped the 1981 horse-of-the year around the course to qualify for the trophy and championship points, which now place her in a tie with Splashy Lea for the leading mare award.
Another good threehorse race was the Thumb Run, open hurdles. Yves Henry on his newly acquired Counterspy led by five to ten lengths for the first mile and a half. Then Frozen O’Jay, Don Yovanovich up, caught him at the third last fence, led by a length over the last two and went on to win by three.
Becky Armstrong, owner and wife of trainer Ronnie Armstrong, was excited by the win of her first race horse, a half-brother of the good steeplechaser Hard Water Man. Second was Counterspy, followed by Don Diz, Ford Rogers ridiner.
