Because of rain, mud and sodden footing, only the true steeplchase diehards ventured to Ben Venue for the Old Dominion Hunt point on Saturday. About 1200 did— and were rewarded with some of the best racing of the season.
It was the first bad weather for this race meeting at the Easthams’ farm since its inauguration here in 1976. And officials, who ordinarily have to brave the elements all day, were able to be under cover in the sturdy new stand.
The Big Cobbler, ownerrider hurdle race, had six starters—two of them former winners of this race, Jay Barr’s Pill Mill in 1981 and Hall of Famer last year. David Moyes’ Joannes Brother set the pace for the first turn of the rolling course, to be joined midway over the sixth fence by Double Sparkle and Hall of Famer.
Then Michael Powers’ Fleet Buster took the lead and was on top for the last two fences, but Randy Waterman sent Hall of Famer after him down the stretch to win by a neck. Third was Chick Owens’ Double Sparkle, followed by Willie McCormick’s Rehab, and Pill Mill was pulled up.
Donald Shepherd made up for last week’s error in cutting a flag by winning the Old Dominion Hunt Cup, featured owner-rider timber race. This first win for Shepherd and his In for a Tag, who has been second three times in the Seven Comers Series, now places them one-half point ahead of Don Yovanovich and Chief P.O.
