quarter mile timber race. At the last fence In for a Tag was in front. Bowles Ruler failed to take off in time, hit hard and fell, but rider Hawkins, who had teeth loosened in the spill, remounted to finish second.
Third was the early leader, David Moyes’ Spare Change. Hawkins, who comes all the way from near Boston, Mass., to compete, keeps his horse in training here with Albert Poe.
Again the ladies put on a good show with their timber race which was the first event over fences. Susan Sutula and her Too Far Gone set the pace, followed by Patti Cassel and her Splashy Lea, last year’s winner of this race. Behind them were Sandra Worsham on El Dinero and Hilary Thompson riding Roy Graham’s Boca Bird, all spread out by five lengths.
Then the pace quickened the last mile with Splashy Lea taking the lead at the third last fence and Boca Bird closing rapidly. It looked like a possible win for the Bird, but Splashy Lea has a tremendous finishing lick, which she turned on to win by three and a half lengths. Third was Too Far Gone.
After accepting the trophy, Miss Cassel gave credit to her friend and competitor Susan Sutula, who has been exercising Splashy Lea ever since Miss Cassel’s fall at Blue Ridge when she broke her collar bone.
Only three horses went to the post for the maiden hurdle race, but it developed into a good contest. Showing their greenness over the fence at the top of the hill, the three were spread out by several lengths for the first half of the course with Double Dog leading and Kiev next.
