Turkey Ridge A Success
To the editor:
As a runner, I wish to thank Phillip Strange, the Castleton Fire Department and Rescue Squad and the entire community of Castleton for the outstanding job they did in putting on last weekend’s Turkey Ridge Roadrace.
All too often we runners go to a race to find that the race seems an afterthought to the goal of making money. Many times the courses are badly marked, run through high traffic areas, the course monitors and timers don’t know or care what their duties are, the finishing times are inexcusably inaccurate and the runners are forgotten as soon as they finish.
But at Castleton, the course was beautiful (and safe), the monitors on the course were helpful and obviously knew what to do, the finishing times were prompt and right on the mark. The warm and clean fire hall was gratefully appreciated by the runners and the homemade goodies were delicious and reasonably priced. Everybody connected with the race was friendly and it made the race a lot of fun.
• In short, the race was as well run as any small race I have attended, and was the best first time race I have ever seen.
From talking with the other runners, I know that they had a good time and many of them said that they would be back for the Second Annual Turkey Ridge Run. Runners always tell other runners about the good races they go to and I am sure that next year’s race will have two or three times this year’s number of participants.
Once again, congratulations to Castleton for a job well done, and I am proud that now Rappahannock has an excellent road race in the fall to go with the just as excellent Fodderstack Classic in the spring.
