The same people come each year. They bring friends. They bring grandchildren. They go take the long hike far out into the woodlands to find the tree that’s exactly right, then they ride the hay wagon back up to the cleared parking areas.
Right now Keim is occupied in a “road widening” operation and awaiting several loads of gravel so he can control the traffic and keep it moving smoothly on the big day. All cars will move one way along the single lane paths around the woodlands and then out the other side, Christmas tree in tow.
The county’s other growers find their Rappahannock trees as eagerly sought. Sean Kilpatrick says he hadn’t started clearing the pathways yet when some weekend visitors stopped by three w'eeks ago and returned to Tidewater with two trees because “they wanted to know where they came from.”
Sean and Sharon Kilpatrick’s Hawthorne Farm will be open Saturdays December 10 and 17 from 9-4 and Sundays December 11 and 18 from 1-4. Pines are $2 per foot, minimum $10. Spruce and firs are $3 per foot, minimum $15. Appointments for tree cutting at other times
