More serious in their implications for culture and for the arts are two afflictions, actually occupational hazards for some persons, reported recently in medical journals. One affects flute players. Labelled “flutist’s neuropathy,” it is marked by numbness of the left index finger and is considered a minor threat to chamber music. The other is called “Gama leg.” The first case of “gama leg” to be clearly identified, diagnosed and named was that of a woman musician whose supper left leg fell asleep as she practiced on a stringed instrument known as the Viola Da Gama, a close musical relative to the cello.
