The spot where Spellman was bulldozing when he was shot by Kidwell is “so blind a place that if you meet someone, one of you must back up. You can’t pass,” Saltonstall said. With the existing roadway banked incorrectly, “you can slide off the road,” she added.
Outlining the improvements she proposes to make, Saltonstall said the driving surface should be 14 feet wide with proper shoulders, extending to 16 feet at some points. It must be graded and ditched so it will maintain itself, she said, adding that she has had experience in building roads over hills at her Points of View farm. As to the intersection with Route 729, “I just want to be able to see and have it wide enough so I can go north or south. I’d like to follow the highway department’s recommendations on that.”
