The right-of-way fight that resulted in the death of Flint Hill farm manager Ranee Spellman last year was brought to Rappahannock’s circuit court on Thursday, December 1.
Spellman was shot from his bulldozer on November 9, 1982, while widening a disputed right-of-way that served lots on Route 729 belonging to Diane and Roger Kidwell and to Spellman’s employer, Patricia Saltonstall. Diane Kidwell, who admitted shooting Spellman but maintained she had done so in self-defense, was tried last March on a charge of murder. The jury that heard the case was unable to reach a verdict. In October, a second panel found Kidwell not guilty.
